Women’s Report: Charnwood College Riders 55-67 Bristol Flyers

Bristol Flyers Women pulled out a hard-fought win in a physical game against the Charnwood College Riders.

Christina Bigica finished with a team-high eighteen points, whilst Becks Cantin, added 16 rebounds to ensure the team came home with the win.

WHAT HAPPENED

Riders secured the tip but quickly lost it to Mai Zilbeti who passed to Flo Ward to secure the first points. Riders’ Wright scored the next basket to level with the Flyers for the first and last time in the game. Cantin and Bigica poured on the points to finish the quarter 6-21.

The second quarter was where the Riders started to get in the game, but Flyers responded and maintained a significant lead. Jepson kicked off the scoring with a lay up but Riders responded with their own.

Sylva and Zilbeti both continued the scoring for the Flyers to keep them in the lead. Riders’ Wright and France both scored three pointers to start to close the gap on the Flyers but they had too much of a gap to catch up before the half.

The third quarter was slow to start, with neither team scoring in the first three minutes. Zilbeti broke the drought with a strong lay up to push the Flyers’ lead to 15. Riders responded to close the gap to just nine points. Ward, Sylva and Jepson all took on the challenge and put up ten points between them to restore their 15 point lead at the end of the third.

The Riders seemed to kick their defence up a gear in the third quarter to really challenge the Flyers but the Flyers held the nerve heading into the final quarter.

Riders had a strong start to the final period, with eight quick points to close the gap to a mere six points behind the Flyers. Bigica re-entered the game to really put the pressure on, with 12 points, four fouls drawn and a steal, the Riders were no match. Flyers ended the game 55-67. With 42 points coming from inside the paint, the Flyers dominated under the basket.
