Preview: Bristol Flyers v Surrey Scorchers

British Basketball League
SGS Wise Arena, Bristol
Saturday, September 19th, Tip-off 7:30pm

Bristol Flyers look to kick-start their new BBL Championship campaign this weekend.

Bristol Flyers take on Surrey Scorchers in their opening game of the BBL season.

SURREY SCORCHERS
The Scorchers enter the BBL this season under new ownership from Surrey Sports Park. The club have turned some heads with their summer-signings to date, notably the return of Tayo Ogedengbe, who played for the Glasgow Rocks last season. Surrey Sports Park, which is also home to netball’s Surrey Storm and badminton’s Surrey Smashers, previously had part-ownership of the BBL franchise, and will be hoping to write another chapter in an eventful story of basketball in the area with the takeover of the Surrey Scorchers.

COACH
The club have gone back to it’s roots in hiring Zimbabwean Head Coach Creon Raftopoulos, who led up the team under it’s previous names Guildford Heat and Surrey Heat. They achieved a top-four finish under him in 2012-13 and reached the BBL Trophy final in 2011, before Raftopoulos was dismissed ahead of a takeover which saw the club’s name changed to Surrey United.

ONE TO WATCH
Andreas Schreiber – The 6ft10in big-man has BBL experience at Worcester Wolves and Plymouth Raiders, whilst last season saw him play his professional basketball in Spain for Zornotza ST in the Spanish third division, where he played 16 games for the club averaging 8.3 points and 5 rebounds. He currently holds a dual citizenship with the United States and Sweden, and plays for the Swedish national basketball team.

OFFICIALS
Taking charge of Saturday’s game will be Andy Thackray, Eduard Udyanskyy and Piotr Florecki

LAST TIME OUT
Flyers managed to put a rough stretch of four consecutive losses behind them with a 70-62 comeback victory against Surrey United at the SGS WISE Arena. Click here to watch the highlights.
