Bristol Flyers hot start to their first season in the BBL came to an end on Friday night after a 76-68 defeat to the hometown London Lions.
The Flyers, who are backed by Bristol Sport, started the stronger of the two teams as they held on to a narrow three point lead at the end of the first quarter, but it would be the London Lions lead by GB captain Drew Sullivan who would go on a run of eight unanswered points to put the Lions up 43-35 heading into half-time.
Some hot shooting from Rod Brown beyond the arc gave the Lions their largest lead of the game at 13 points, but the Flyers pegged them back to within three points early in the fourth period through some clutch shooting from England U18 international Dwayne Lautier-Ogunleye.
However the Flyers were unable to take control of the game, as Rod Brown sparked another run for the Lions, knocking down a big three-pointer to seal the victory 76-68.
A first defeat for the Flyers after their positive opening weekend performance saw two strong wins.
Flyers new American signing Doug Herring Jr led the way with 19 points on the night, whilst fellow American Alif Bland added 11, including four blocked shots.
Despite the result, Flyers head coach Andreas Kapoulas was proud of his team’s performance:
“The Lions are a very good basketball team, they have some great individuals, and when we went behind we didn’t give up.”
“We had opportunities to win the game but unfortunately we weren’t able to do so. It was a team performance that bought us back into the game and we want to keep building on that.”
“We know we can compete with the best, we just need to keep working on our game and get ready for the next challenge”
