Kapoulas hails character in comeback

Andreas Kapoulas has praised his team’s character after seeing his side jump back into BBL Play-Off position.

Flyers ran out four point winners against Glasgow Rocks on Saturday night, after trailing by as many as 14 points in the first half to claim the season series in front of a sold out WISE Arena.

Leslee Smith sparked an 11-2 run to open the third quarter, scoring ten of a team-high 18 points in the the period, whist holding the visitors scoreless for six minutes to re-take the lead.

Flyers hit 12 points in a row over the third quarter break to open a double digit lead of their own to avenge their previous defeat in front of the BBC Sport cameras.

“I’m very proud of the players,” head coach Kapoulas told Bristol Flyers TV.

"It was a very important win, it's the first time in the BBL that we’ve beaten Glasgow twice, we’ve got the head to head against them and it was a game of two halves for sure.

“Our levels of intensity in that first half were not there. Fast forward to the second half, we got 11 consecutive stops between the third and fourth quarter and that fuelled our offence.

"The bottom line is that it comes down to our defence, Flyers basketball has always been about taking pride on the defensive end and I thought we did that very well in the second half.”

Leslee Smith finished with a team-high 18 points and eight rebounds

DEFENCE CREATES OFFENCE

Flyers’ defence was unstoppable for much of the second half. Coach K’s men held the Rocks to just 16 points in 16 second half minutes and just 32% shooting, whilst pouring in 40 second half points of their own.

"The comeback, the passion and the pride that we showed on the defensive was a good old Flyers basketball performance,” Kapoulas added.

"I feel like we’re improving on both ends of the court and we’ve been working a lot in practice to try and improve our defence and I think it’s paying off.

"Ultimately, it’s about having five guys on the court all being on the same page. When we do that we can be very successful and now it’s time to build that consistency in our game.

"A win like this shows that we have toughness, our brand of basketball relies on the defensive end I think we’re getting better."

"We’ve said from that start that this is a journey and we’re very excited about what’s coming ahead. We need to take it one game at a time and we cannot rush ahead of things, but we’ve just got to keep building on the good things that we do, because ultimately they win games for us."
