Josh Rogers extends stay with hometown club

Josh Rogers has extended his stay with Bristol Flyers until the end of the 2020/21 season.

The Bristolian forward has committed for a second year with his hometown club, after re-joining the Flyers last season following spells in the US and in Europe.

Born in Bristol, Rogers came through the ranks at the Flyers and graduated from the SGS basketball academy, making his senior debut in September 2011 at the age of 17 in NBL Division one.

He went on to sign a full athletic scholarship with Carson-Newman in NCAA Division two, making 110 appearances during his collegiate career, posting an average of 9.4 points and 6.8 rebounds in his senior year.

Speaking to the club’s official YouTube channel, Rogers said: “It’s really exciting to be able to build on the positive aspects from last season and keep progressing the club’s journey.

"I’ve been using this time during lockdown to learn more about my game.

"I’ve been in regular contact with Coach Kapoulas and having film review sessions over zoom - it's been great to go in depth on little things that will make us more effective next season.

"The fact that we’ve got a core group of players coming back that have experienced what it's like to compete in a BBL Cup Final will be huge for us.

"There’s a good amount of players returning that understand what it’s going to take to get back there again this season."

Rogers signed his first professional contract with Hapoel Beer Sheva in Isreal’s second tier, where he played a single season before a move to London City Royals in September 2018.

The 26-year-old made 21 appearances for the Royals and was a key part of the their 2019 Trophy-winning squad, which also reached the play-off final at the O2 Arena.

Last season Rogers made 12 league appearances for the Flyers, whilst helping the club reach their first ever BBL Cup Final, before the season was cut short due to the coronavirus pandemic.

"Josh is a player that has come through our academy programme and it was a great feeling to be able to bring him home last season after years of playing overseas,” said Flyers Head Coach Andreas Kapoulas.

"Having him return is huge for our programme. He is a great role model for young players and we are certainly looking for him to make more of an impact this coming season with his skill, versatility and leadership qualities.”
