PLYMOUTH CITY PATRIOTS

Plymouth City Patriots are the newest franchise in the BBL, forming in the aftermath of Plymouth Raiders demise from the league this summer. The struggles of the COVID-19 pandemic overwhelmed the Raiders and sadly saw the end of their longstanding contribution to British basketball. Flyers have the honour of welcoming the Patriots to the BBL in their historic debut game and renewing their South West rivalry against the new side.

HEAD COACH

Head Coach Paul James picks up his unfinished business in Plymouth, having spent the past three seasons at the helm of the Raiders. Coach James led the Raiders to the BBL Trophy final and third place in the BBL Championship with a 21-9 record last year, but is still looking to bring silverware to the city.

While the Patriots are new to the league, Coach James is certianly not. Entering his 26th season as a head coach and his fourth year in Plymouth, his experience will be key in setting the tone for the new club.

The departure of first assistant coach Danny Magee from Plymouth over the summer does leave Coach James needing a new right hand man and Magee’s keen scouting insight will surely be missed. The pair moved together from Worcester to Plymouth in 2017.

ONE TO WATCH

Elvisi Dusha is a high energy playmaker at the guard position and one of a handful of players remaining in Plymouth from last year's Raiders squad. He has been a thorn in the side of Flyers in South West derbies since rejoining Raiders in 2020, after an initial spell in the 2016/17 season.

The point guard is in his prime at 27-years-old and is likely to shoulder increased responsibility and bigger minutes this year. Expect Coach James to hand him the keys to the Patriots' offence and see the ball pass through his hands every possession.

LAST TIME OUT

With Patriots making their BBL debut tomorrow, we have to reach back to the previous franchise for a Bristol vs Plymouth derby. Raiders claimed an 87-65 victory at the Pavilions in February, with Great Britain international Ashley Hamilton leading the way with 19 points.
