Game recap » Newcastle Eagles 55-73 Bristol Flyers

Bristol Flyers put together a dominant defensive performance on the road to improve to 4-1 in the BBL Championship.

Trejon Jacob and Malcolm Delpeche both finished with double-doubles as the Flyers picked up a first-ever win at the Vertu Motors Arena.

The Eagles raced off to an early 15-5 lead to start the game. Jacob cashed in a deep contested three to get the ball rolling for the Flyers. A tough drive to the basket then saw him step to the charity line for another two points before back-to-back threes from Shane Walker sealed the quarter and gave Bristol their first lead of the game.

Flyers came out firing, getting off to a run to start the second. Jacob pulled up off the dribble and knocked down a trey-bomb, then Zach Simmons pounded his way inside to extend the run to 9-2. Delpeche fought through contact on a tough layup, but stubborn defence from both sides closed out the half on a low scoring second quarter.

Marcus Evans hung in the air and fired for the first two points of the second half. He had his hand in a plentiful sequence of points for the Flyers, first finding Delpeche with a lofty pass off the pick and roll. Then hitting him one more time with an accurate full-court pass before coming off the screen to split the defence for a basket of his own.

Jacob stole the ball off the inbounds to set up Evans once more for the bucket. Walker leaked out for the flush to open the fourth, then Thomas-Edwards drilled the trey. Simmons went up and under to fake the defender and got the shot to drop, closing the contest 73-55 to Bristol.

turning point

The Flyers started the second quarter with a 9-2 run after ending the first with some hot shooting from behind the arc that gave them their first lead. From there on, they were never really challenged as some stifling defence allowed Bristol to come away with a 19-rebound advantage.
