Bristol Flyers II opened their season with a loss, failing to contain the scorers of Northamptonshire Titans.
Marvin Dinnall and Ty Harley had 18 points each but Titans guard Leon Henry led all scorers with 26 points.
A high-scoring first quarter saw both teams finding open lanes to the basket. Flyers jumped out to an early lead with Pasquale Landolfi connecting from deep and Dinnall getting to the foul line early and often. Henry went on a scoring tear to level the game. Jason Tucker took over scoring for the Titans in the second quarter, getting out in transition off Flyers turnovers.
Jermaine Major helped Flyers to narrow the gap, overpowering the defence on multiple scores. Harley set the tone for an improved second half for Flyers, scoring on successive possessions. Points from turnovers allowed Titans to outlast the run and a dry spell for the Flyers offence saw the lead stretch back to double digits.
Coach Bourne looked back to his starting five in the fourth quarter and they were able to battle back into the game but could not quite close the gap.
Extra defensive effort late in the game allowed Flyers to get much needed stops and cut into the lead. The high pace imposed throughout started to wear on Titans. Multiple blocks from centre Lukasz Kubik and forced turnovers gave Flyers a chance to score in transition. Bringing the game within single digits heading into the final minutes was critical but a Titans timeout allowed them to regroup.
Ty Harley had 18 points, four steals, three rebounds and two assists.
Flyers got away with fouling too much with Titans struggling at the foul line, hitting 14 of 30 attempts. Offensive rebounds were a big factor with Titans generating 17 second chance points.
Flyers bench contributions outweighed Titans with the Northamptonshire team only generating two bench points to 21 for Bristol.
Flyers second team are back in action at the SGS College Arena on Sunday, October 10th. They host new NBL Division three side Bristol Basketball United in the Men’s National Cup.
With free entry and familiar faces from the Flyers’ program on both sides this local derby is not to be missed (1:00pm tip-off).
