Bristol Flyers II claimed a win over the visiting Charnwood Riders to improve to a 1-1 record in NBL Division Two North.
Pasquale Landolfi led all scorers with 26 points. Jason Soodeen had 22 points and 15 rebounds.
Flyers got out to an early lead with Landolfi splashing back to back threes. Soodeen was relentless going to the basket and added to the total. Dan Hadley responded for Charnwood with outside scoring of his own. The first period finished with Flyers ahead 20-13.
Riders took a lead in the second quarter behind three point scoring from Hadley and Jacob Adams. Ire Akande brought pace and energy from the bench for Bristol, breaking down Riders defence and getting to the rim.
Bristol’s starting unit came out refocused after half-time. Ty Harley made plays at both ends, scoring a driving lay-up then blocking a shot. Marvin Dinnall sank a high arcing lay-up of the glass. Forward Chris Yapo was effective for Riders, driving in for a pair of dunks. Landolfi began to see open lanes and made multiple scores at the basket, drawing fouls. He went 7-7 from the free throw line to make the fouls count.
Flyers used defence to fuel offence early in the fourth quarter and opened up a double digit lead by forcing turnovers and scoring in transition. Steals from Soodeen, Harley and a blocked shot from Josh Strongman were crucial in keeping Riders from adding to their total and allowing Flyers to control the game and complete a 10-0 run.
Pasquale Landolfi put his experience playing with the BBL team to good use on his way to 26 points. He added 10 rebounds for a double-double. Five made three pointers ensured Riders defence had to honour his shooting and opened up driving lanes. Perfect shooting from the foul line punished Riders for fouls.
Flyers dominated the boards behind double-doubles from Soodeen and Landolfi, winning the rebounding battle 62 to 47. Riders struggled with outside shooting in the second-half and finished 5-31 (16%) on the game. Flyers went 8-26 (30%).
Flyers are due to face Myerscough away on Sunday October 24th. Their next home game is Saturday October 30th at the SGS College Arena against Manchester Magic (3pm tip-off).
