Former Flyers academy player signs Italian pro contract

Former SGS Basketball Academy player Corey Samuels has signed his first professional contract with A.S.D Castanea Basket 2010.

The 19-year-old guard will compete in the fifth tier of Italian basketball for the 2019/20 campaign.

Samuels came through the Flyers’ player pathway, before transferring to the Preston-based Myerscough basketball academy in 2018.

Speaking to myerscoughbasketball.co.uk, Samuels said: “This has been the ultimate goal for a long time.

“Partway into the year, I promised myself that by the end of the season I would sign somewhere - whether that be a collegiate letter or a professional contract.

“I believe the best option for me was to start my career professionally and I can’t wait to get to business. I still have goals to accomplish, but this is a key milestone and certainly one I won’t forget.”

SGS Basketball Academy head coach Chris Bourne added: "Corey has grown up through all the age groups of the Bristol Flyers programme and it has been a pleasure to watch him develop as a player and a person, both on and off the court.

"He and his family will always be a part of our club and we excited to follow his progress as he takes this next step in his basketball career."
