Flyers Women complete double-winning weekend

Bristol Flyers Women completed another double-winning weekend to remain top of WNBL Division One.

The team secured wins over Reading Rockets and Team Solent Kestrels to improve to 12-2 on the season.

Bristol Flyers 67-61 Reading Rockets

Flyers won the tip and put points on the board straight away with a lay up from Flo Ward. Reading put up two baskets of their own before fouling Cristina Bigica to send her to the line. Both teams managed to stay toe to toe for the rest of the quarter until Segura Moreno made a three-pointer to put this visitors ahead by five, 16-21.

The Flyers started off the second half with a couple of missed shots, but Fox made a three-pointer, which was quickly followed with a lay-up from Wallace. Zilbeti and Bigica helped extend the lead to 16 before Reading hit back with a triple from Valdeolmillos Gomez. An and-1 play for Reading’s Hermida Nunez brought Reading back in touching distance and Segura Moreno scored to bring Reading to within four points going into the final quarter.

Tensions were high in the final ten minutes as Reading narrowed the gap down to two. Bigica scored an and-1 lay-up and Ward scored a three to give the Flyers a bit of breathing room. Reading dug deep to bring them right back to within one point with only four minutes remaining. The Flyers held on and through their teamwork and determination managed to come away with the win - 67-61.

Team Solent Kestrels 66-72 Bristol Flyers

The second game of the weekend was a nail biter that went down to the wire.

Wallace took the first points of the game from the opening tip, but Solent hit back with a three-pointer from Karpova and a lay up from Gomez. Juul and Bigica both scored to stay within reach of Solent as both teams finished the quarter with the scoreboard reading 24-21 in the hosts favour.

Solent put up the first points of the second to give them their largest lead of the game at eight, but McDonald stopped the run with a driving lay up. Wallace scored a three-pointer to bring the Flyers within one, but Gomez responded with a triple of her own. Solent managed to hold onto the lead going into half-time, but not before Zilbeti scored a three to keep the pressure on from the Flyers, 46-42.

The third quarter was a turning point for the Flyers, who limited Solent to a mere six points, whilst the Flyers racked up 12 to take the lead.

The Flyers brought some big energy into the last quarter and Wallace kicked things off with a steal for an easy two. Gomez managed to draw a foul to bring Solent two points closer with free throws, and Karpova made a jump shot for two more, bringing Solent within two points of the Flyers.

Bigica wouldn’t give up without a fight and hit back with four points of her own. Bigica made an important three-pointer to extend the Flyers’ lead to seven. It was then a game of free throws, with both teams going to the line three times each as Flyers maintained their composure to come away with the win.
