Flyers land Zach Simmons from North Texas

Bristol Flyers can confirm the signing of Zach Simmons from the University of North Texas.

The 6ft10in American forward signs his first professional contract with the Flyers and joins on a one-year deal.

Simmons posted a career average of 8.7 points and 5.8 rebounds during his four-year spell at North Texas and was a key member of their team that won the Conference USA tournament last season.

He went on to lead UNT to their first ever NCAA Tournament victory in March, with a 78-69 overtime win against Purdue.

Simmons graduated North Texas University as the program’s all-time leader in field goal percentage (.637) and ranks 16th in UNT’s all-time scoring list with 1,127 points.

Speaking on signing his first professional contract, Simmons said: “It’s been a long journey playing basketball and just getting the chance to play on a professional level is a blessing.

"The team that Coach Kapoulas has put together on paper is amazing. I played against some of those guys in college and I’m super excited to have them on my team this time.

"The way coach has talked about the team, you can tell he really loves basketball and he’s very passionate about winning - that’s something I really value in a coach.

"I’ve heard that the Flyers have a great crowd and I look forward to having the energy back in the arena.

"It’s going to be a good year - this is going to be one the best teams I feel like Bristol has ever had."

Flyers Head Coach Andreas Kapoulas said: "We are excited to have Zach join our team and look forward to working with him.

“He's been one of the most consistent and efficient players in Conference USA over the last four years and has played a key part in the success of his college program.

"When you look his time in North Texas there are many impressive achievements, but one that particularly stands out is the fact that he started in 121 games, including the final 99 straight games of his college career - it just reveals a lot about him as a player and demonstrates how imperative he's been to the team.

"Zach is a smart player with a proficient post game, strong passing and rebounding abilities. He is also a physical defender that uses his size and length very well. He most certainly adds another layer to our already dynamic roster."
