Flyers add experience with Shane Walker

Bristol Flyers are proud to announce the arrival of Shane Walker from the London Lions on an initial one-year contract.

The 6ft10in British forward adds a wealth of BBL experience to Coach Kapoulas’ 2021/22 roster, having won two successive trebles with Leicester Riders in 2017 and 2018.

Walker spent last season with the Lions, where he helped them win the BBL Trophy for the first time in club history, following a 88-82 win over the Plymouth Raiders in March.

Speaking to Flyers TV, Walker said: “It’s amazing to finally be here. I already have a great relationship with Coach Kapoulas from our time together with England at the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast. He was one of the motivating factors for me coming here.

"We have a lot of young players on the team this year, so it will be good for me to share my experience on what it takes to win in this league.

"I want to win a championship here in Bristol. I’ve done that everywhere I’ve been throughout my career, so for me to not to do that will be a disappointment.

"I know the WISE Campus is one of the loudest buildings in the BBL, so to get everyone back and experience that will be exciting.”

As part of his role with the Flyers, Walker has also been appointed to the SGS Basketball Academy coaching staff, helping the next generation of young players in Bristol.

Flyers Head Coach Andreas Kapoulas said: “We're excited to welcome Shane to our club. He has always been an integral part in the success of all the clubs that he has played for and we expect him to do the same here in Bristol.

“He's an experienced versatile big that can score, defend, rebound, block shots, but most importantly he's a player that does whatever the team needs to win games - that will be huge for us this season.

"It’s also really great for our programme to see Shane join the SGS College coaching staff. His knowledge and experience at the collegiate, professional and national team levels will be invaluable and will certainly contribute to the further development of our academy players."
