The Bristol Flyers surprised a young fan with a rare illness by attending his tenth birthday party and presenting him with a signed basketball.
Jack Buchanan suffers from tricho-hepato-entirec syndrome, a condition which affects only 40 people across the world, with most not making it past their fifth birthday.
The ten year-old, from Bedminster, is an avid basketball fan and followed the Flyers last year in their last season in the English Basketball League before they make the step up to the professional British Basketball League this September.
Jack’s mother contacted the Flyers to request a signed ball for his birthday. The players were so moved by the young Flyers’ fan story that they personally presented Jack with the ball at his birthday party.
Greg Streete, Flyers captain, spoke about how much it meant to the players to be able to do something special for Jack "It is incredible to see what he's coping with and that sport evidently inspires him. We're proud to have been able to meet Jack and his family and present him with our team ball."
The Flyers have also given Jack a complimentary season ticket for 2014/15 and look forward to welcoming him to their first home game in the BBL on Saturday 27th against the Plymouth University Raiders.
Look out for fundraisers at Flyers games throughout the season for Wallace & Gromit’s Grand Appeal, to raise much needed funds for the Bristol Children’s Hospital which has helped care for Jack throughout his illness – click here to donate online.
