Andreas Kapoulas has been appointed head coach for the Great Britain U20s men’s team at the European Championships this summer.
Coach K makes the step up from GB U20s assistant coach, a position he has held alongside his Flyers role, for the last two years. In 2014 he helped GB achieve their best ever finish of 11th place.
“I’m very honoured to be appointed. To be asked to coach a national team is the highest honour you can have in any sport and it’s a great opportunity, which I’m really excited about it.
“We have a big summer ahead of us with the Europeans in July and I really look forward to working with the players, coaching staff and everyone involved with British Basketball.
“Being with the U20s for the past two years under Douglas Leichner and working with James Vear, has been a great experience and I will do my utmost to maintain the high standards of the programme.
Coach Kapoulas brings a wealth of experience and knowledge with him after coaching England’s U15s in 2010/2011 and the U16s in 2012/2013. Making the step up to Under-20s two years ago he has coached many of the players through their international junior development.
Renowned for his work in the BBL (British Basketball League) as head coach of the Bristol Flyers, Kapoulas landed the Molten BBL “Coach of the Year” accolade during the club’s maiden season after sealing a Play-Off spot at the first attempt.
James Vear will continue as assistant coach for a fourth successive year.
Coach K added: “James is a very experienced coach and we work very well together.
“It is great for the programme to have him and ensures continuity.”
The U20 European Championship Division B will take place in Chalkida, Greece between July 15th to 24th.
Great Britain have been drawn in Group C with Netherlands, Kosovo, Ireland, Albania and the host nation Greece.
Look out for an interview with Coach K on his appointment on Bristol Sport TV later today.
