Bristol Flyers - Around The Club 23/11/18

We take an in-depth look at everything that's happening around the club this weekend away from the Bristol Flyers first team.

This week’s home highlight is a triple header of junior basketball at WISE on Saturday, November 24th. The Under-16 girls tip things off against Surrey Rams at 11.30am, followed by the Under-18s II against Torbay Tigers (1.30pm) and Under-14 boys regional team against Vale Vipers (3.30pm).

Bristol Flyers II

Flyers II are currently joint sixth in the Division three south table with a 1-3 record. They play away against last place Barking Abbey (0-5) on the road on Saturday, November 24th (2.00pm).

Flyers Women maintained pole position in WNBL Division One with a 65-60 win over Anglia Ruskin on Saturday. Their record improves to 6-1 to put them two wins clear of closest rivals Team Solent Kestrels II at 4-2. Cristina Bigica led all scorers with 15 points. She was ably supported by Captain Fiona Fox with 13 and point guard Flo Ward with 12.

A quirk of the schedule saw the two teams play each-other again the next day, this time in the National Cup. Anglia Ruskin made some effective adjustments overnight and were able to defend their home court, winning 81-60. The loss sees Flyers knocked out of the cup competition.

Focus turns back to league competition with an away trip to Southwark Pride on Saturday November 24th (2.00pm). Pride are currently 3-2 in Division one. LiveStats for the game will be available below for those that want to follow online.

LIVESTATS

Flyers Under-18s Premier

Flyers beat West Bromwich Albion 72-62 last Saturday. This improves their record to 4-0 in the Central Premier division and ties Team Birmingham Elite for top of the league.

The team have a free weekend to prepare for their next game; they host Northants Thunder on Saturday, December 1st. The Thunder are in last place with an 0-3 record and also have a weekend of rest ahead of the fixture. A win over the Thunder will see Flyers secure sole possession of the top spot, at least until Team Birmingham Elite travel to Oaklands Wolves the next day.

Flyers Under-18s Conference

Flyers U18 II lost 78-47 away against Vale Vipers last Saturday. Flyers II are still searching for their first win at 0-6 and have a chance to earn it when they host Torbay Tigers at WISE on Saturday, November 24th (1.30pm). Torbay have had a mixed run through the season to date and hold a 3-2 record so far.

Flyers Under-16s Boys

Flyers U16s earned a 72-55 victory over visiting Chelmsford Lions last Saturday and improve to fifth in the Premier Central division with a 5-2 record. The team travel to Ipswich on Saturday, November 24th.

Flyers will hope to continue their winning ways against Ipswich, who are in eighth place with a 3-4 record after losing in overtime to Oaklands Wolves last weekend.

Flyers Under-16s Girls

Flyers Under-16 Girls suffered their first loss in the South West division last weekend to go 3-1. They fell 72-46 to Cardiff Met Archers last Saturday. Archers remain at the top of the table with a 5-0 record. Archers also defeated Flyers earlier in the year, eliminating them from the National Cup in a blowout victory.

Coach Vega Fuentes commented “There was huge improvement from the girls against the strongest team in this league and a team that beat us by 60 points back in September.

"The girls worked really hard, giving them a fright as we were beating them by a couple of points at half-time. Their experience paid off in the end and we ran out of steam, but there were a lot of positives to take from the game.”

The Flyers girls have a chance to bounce back when they host Surrey Rams at WISE on Saturday November 24th (11.30am).

Flyers Under-14s Boys I

The U14 boys dropped to fourth in the Premier South division at 5-2 after losing a close game to visiting Sussex Bears last weekend. The Bears climb over them into third place with the 69-66 win.

Coach Hill commented “This was a tough loss. We have to play with consistency for a full 40 minutes. Everything comes from our defence and it just wasn't there in the first half.

We again showed heart to come back from double digit deficit and had a shot to win it with seven seconds left. We ran a good play and got a wide open shot that went half way down and popped out.”

After back to back defeats Flyers will look to get back on track when they travel to Winchester City Royals on Saturday November 24th. The Royals are 3-3 in the league so far and defeated Team Solent Kestrels last weekend.

Flyers Under-14s Boys II

U14 II put in good team performances, but ultimately lost both games in their Central Venue League (CVL) tournament on Saturday, November 17th. They will host Vale Vipers at WISE on Saturday, November 24th (3.30pm).

Flyers Junior Girls

The U14 Girls played away in Penryn last Saturday. They came away with two wins from the doubleheader fixture. They are next in action in a pair of CVL tournaments, first travelling to Birmingham on Saturday, December 1st, then hosting at Hengrove Leisure Centre on Sunday December 9th.

The U10s also went to Wales last Saturday, playing two games at Archers Arena and coming away with one win and one loss. The U12s will travel to Gloucester College for a CVL tournament on Sunday November 25th. The U10s will play at the same venue the following week on Saturday December 1st.
