We take an in-depth look at what's happening around the club this weekend away from the Bristol Flyers first team.
The home highlight this week is a double header at WISE on Saturday. The Under-16 boys open up against Surrey Rams (11.30am) and the Under-18s Premier team follow against Oaklands Wolves (1.30pm). With free entry these games are a great way to warm up for the BBL clash against Newcastle Eagles.
Flyers II are half way through an extended break and play again on Saturday, November 10th when they are away at Swindon Shock. Flyers are currently fourth in the Division Three table with a 1-2 record. Swindon are joint first with a 3-2 record having defeated Essex Blades on Saturday 111-75 on Saturday. The Shock have multiple offensive threats and their backcourt pairing are looking strong coming off a double-double performance on Saturday, Ed Potter had 32 points and 14 rebounds and Antonio Wilburn 31 points and 14 assists.
Flyers Women had back-to-back wins at the weekend. First, they secured a 67-55 road win against Loughborough Riders, where Christina Bigica led all scorers with 18 points and Becks Cantin added eight points and 16 rebounds. The win sees Flyers take the top spot in WNBL Division One with a 4-1 record. Team Solent Kestrels (3-1) and Ipswich basketball (3-2) are close behind the Flyers so they need to keep their consistency to maintain the league leading position.
The ladies were straight back in action the next day, with a home game in the National Cup. They defeated visiting Division Two side Northamptonshire Titans 94-45. Bigica again led in scoring with 23 points but also contributed eight assists and five rebounds. Captain Fiona Fox added 18 points and nine rebounds from the bench. Molly James also had a big impact off the pine with 15 points and five assists. Cantin was again a dominant force on the inside with eight points, 23 rebounds, six steals and four blocks.
The women have a weekend off this week. They hit the road again on Sunday November 11th to face Reading Rockets in the league. Rockets have a 2-2 record and will also be rested after two weekends off.
Flyers were eliminated from the U18 National Cup after falling 75-48 against the visiting Sussex Storm on Saturday October 27th. The team will now refocus on their campaign in the U18 Central Premier Division with a home game against Oaklands Wolves on Saturday November 3rd (1.30pm). Flyers are tied with Oaklands in third place, both teams holding a 2-0 record.
The Under 18 conference team fell to visiting Plymouth Raiders 74-51 on Saturday. The team are currently 0-3 in the South West conference. Flyers U18 II are playing a rare midweek game this week; they will host Bristol Storm at WISE on Thursday November 1st (6.30pm). The Bristol Storm team are currently 3-0 in the league having defeated Worcester Wolves this weekend.
The Under-16 Boys rested this weekend. Their Premier Central record stands at 3-2 which ties Southend Rockets for fifth place in the table. Flyers host Surrey Rams at WISE on Saturday November 3rd (11.30am). The Rams are still seeking a first win with an 0-6 record after falling to Oaklands Wolves this weekend.
Flyers Under-16 Girls hold an undefeated 3-0 record at the top of the South West division. Their next game is now Saturday November 17th away against Cardiff Met Archers. Archers eliminated Flyers in the cup and have tied Flyers 3-0 record with a dominant 119-24 win over Reading Rockets this weekend. This will be a tough challenge for the Flyers girls and a pivotal game in deciding the league.
The U14 Boys won 88-54 on the road against Surrey Rams on Saturday October 27th. They remain undefeated at the top of the Premier South table with five wins. The U14s have a weekend off and will then travel to London United on Saturday November 10th. The London team are close behind them with a 4-0 record and are away against Winchester City Royals this weekend so have a chance to join the Flyers boys at the top of the table before their match-up.
U14 II head to Gloucester for their next Central Venue League tournament on Saturday November 3rd.
The U14 girls will join the boys second team as they head to the Gloucester CVL tournament on Saturday November 3th. The U12s and U10s are playing a friendly game against Cardiff Met Archers at Hengrove Leisure Centre on Sunday November 4th.
